What is a Datum? Advancements in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing

Technology in SAR

About the Course

This class will explore the latest developments in geospatial technologies, including emerging datums, industry trends, the modernization of U.S. geospatial frameworks, and the forthcoming deprecation of NAD83.

Key Topics will include:

Introduction to Geodesy and Datums
• Learn the fundamental concepts of geodesy and what datums are.
• Understand their role in ensuring accurate positioning and navigation.

Common Issues and Misunderstandings in Geospatial Data
• Examine real-world challenges tied to Spatial Reference Systems (SRS).
• Understand how errors in these systems can affect navigators.

Comparison of Commonly Used Datums
• Explore NAD27, NAD83, NATREF2022, and WGS84.
• Analyze their differences, strengths, and limitations.

Modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS)
• Dive into ongoing updates to the NSRS.
• Discuss the replacement of NAD83, reasons for modernization, and anticipated outcomes.

Geodetic Models for Magnetic Declination and True North
• Learn how magnetic declination is determined and updated.
• Understand its significance for navigation and how changes to True North are managed.

(Time Permitting) Introduction to GPS, GNSS, and Timing
• Gain a brief overview of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).
• Examine the critical role of precise timing in positioning accuracy.
