About the Course
During this fully interactive session, instructor Heiko Stopsack will describe a real-world complex winter backcountry rescue mission that took place on 1/22/2025 in Chelan County WA. Facilitated by Charley Shimanski, the students will participate in live interactive decision-making as Stopsack describes the initial callout. With each decision-point that the King County Aviation Support Unit faced (for example: (1) launch the helicopter for a night hoist, (2) send ground teams in for a night ground evac, (3) perform a helicopter evac, but wait until morning) , the participants will choose from the 3 or 4 options through a live online Slido poll using their cell phone. After each poll, Stopsack will describe what option the rescue team chose. The entire session will be deeply rooted in conversation and problem-solving among the participants on topics such as risk assessment, asset deployment, etc.
